I was sitting at my favorite tapas restaurant with my boyfriend in early 2023, enjoying foods I had eaten countless times before without any issue.
After several minutes, I noticed my scalp starting to itch. At first it was subtle, the kind of itch you try to ignore in public. I discreetly scratched my head and continued the conversation.
But the itching didn’t stop.
Within minutes it spread into a diffuse burning and itching sensation down my neck and back. It lingered long after the meal ended. Over the following weeks, these episodes began appearing at what seemed like random times—often after eating foods that had never caused problems before.
Something wasn’t right.
When Symptoms Begin to Escalate
At the beginning of that year, I had made a commitment to prioritize my health. I joined a local gym that offered individualized training programs to improve strength and bone density—important goals for someone with a naturally smaller frame.
Each morning I would drive home feeling proud of the discipline of showing up early and sticking with it.
But after several weeks, my daughter noticed something I hadn’t fully connected yet.
“Mom, your symptoms seem worse after the gym.”
She was right.
After workouts, the burning and itching sensations intensified. Soon they were joined by something even more concerning: brain fog.
At work, I found myself staring at my computer screen, struggling to finish patient charts. My thinking felt slow and distant, as if a cloud had descended over my mind.
Meanwhile, the burning and itching sensations crept across my scalp, back, and legs.
Soon anxiety, insomnia, and deep frustration followed.

When Even the Doctor Can’t Find the Answer
As a physician, I began doing what doctors do: investigating.
I tried medications.
I tried supplements.
I ran labs.
Nothing seemed to explain the severity of what I was experiencing.
Meanwhile, my body continued to react to more and more foods. Eventually my diet became restricted to fewer than ten foods I could tolerate without symptoms.
At times the sensations were relentless.
I remember telling myself quietly:
You can’t continue living like this.
The most unsettling part was a strange sense of dissociation. At times I felt as though I was sitting several feet behind myself, watching my life from a distance.
Despite my medical training, I felt stuck.
A Clue Appears
Then something curious happened.
During two trips away from home—one to Florida in early April and another to New York later that summer—my symptoms improved dramatically.
The burning, itching, and brain fog eased.
But when I returned home, they came back.
That pattern raised questions.
Around this time, I was speaking with a brilliant colleague and friend, Dr. Lisa Laborwit, about what I had been experiencing. I described the symptoms, the food reactions, and the puzzling improvement when I traveled.
She paused for a moment and then said something that changed everything.
“Mary… it’s your office. You have a mold problem.”
The Moment Everything Made Sense
Her comment immediately brought something to mind.
I had recently joined an online clinical mentorship community led by Dr. Neil Nathan, one of the world’s leading experts in complex chronic illness related to mold exposure and tick-borne infections.
In one discussion, a clinician asked a question that sounded eerily familiar:
What does it mean when a patient suddenly develops numerous food sensitivities with itching and burning, but the reactions are inconsistent?
Dr. Nathan’s response was simple.
“In cases like that, it is often mold illness and/or infections such as Lyme or Bartonella.”
I remember reading that and thinking:
Really? Could it be that simple?
At first, I resisted the idea. Like many physicians, I had been trained in a system where environmental illness is often overlooked.
But the pieces began falling into place.
The worsening symptoms at home.
The improvement when traveling.
The unexplained neurological and immune reactions.
The expanding food sensitivities.
The truth was difficult—but clear.
From Illness to Healing
Once I understood what was happening, my focus shifted.
I immersed myself in the work of experts such as Dr. Neil Nathan and Dr. Jill Crista, while also applying the principles of functional and integrative medicine I had spent years studying.
Recovery required addressing multiple layers of complex illness, including:
- Environmental exposure
- Immune system dysregulation
- Nervous system imbalance
- Gut and detoxification pathways
- Hidden infections and inflammatory triggers
Healing did not happen overnight. But step by step, my body began to recover.
Today I am grateful to say that I am well.
Why I Created My Healing Program
Going through this experience changed the way I practice medicine.
I now understand firsthand what so many patients with complex chronic illness experience:
- Being told their labs are “normal”
- Trying treatment after treatment without relief
- Developing strange symptoms no one can explain
- Feeling dismissed or misunderstood
My personal journey became the foundation for the comprehensive healing program I now offer in my practice.
This program was designed specifically for patients dealing with complex conditions such as:
- Mold-related illness
- Chronic inflammatory conditions
- Complex fatigue and brain fog
- Multiple food sensitivities
- Persistent symptoms that haven’t responded to conventional care
By combining cutting-edge clinical research with my own lived experience as both physician and patient, I developed a structured, compassionate pathway designed to help people recover their health, clarity, and vitality.
